CANDIDATE: Sarah Perry, King County Council District 3 Candidate

ARTS PLATFORM

I come from a family with a deep appreciation for the arts. In addition to being raised in an academic household, my parents were singers, dancers and painters. My siblings and I are also singers and painters, while my husband was a ballroom dance instructor for twenty years. We are a family that believes in the critical need for arts in education, and as a result, both of our children participated in choir and theatre from elementary through high school. As a family, we were season ticket holders at Village Theatre in Issaquah, and both of our kids grew up in the Village Theatre Kids Stage program. They went on to graduate from Cornish College of the Arts, with our daughter focusing in vocal jazz, and our son focusing in fine arts. Through these experiences my family has seen the incredible power that art has to both challenge people and allow healing through self-expression. The arts are often the only outlet for some of our youth to express their authentic selves, and so it’s vital that we do everything we can to expand access to the arts for all of our communities.
