Andrew Lewis, Seattle City Council District 7 Candidate (Incumbent) — 2023 Primary Election

CANDIDATE: Andrew Lewis, Seattle City Council District 7 (Incumbent)

ARTS PLATFORM

As the Seattle City Councilmember for District 7, I am honored to represent most of Seattle’s premier arts and cultural institutions. Laura and I are avid patrons of the arts and frequently attend the Seattle Opera and Symphony, as well as the Seattle Repertory Theatre, 5th Avenue Theater, and the Paramount, among many others.

The shock of COVID has dug a deep hole into our arts scene. One that is not easily fixed. Some of our arts partners did not even survive the cliff while others struggle daily to hang on. I support King County using the recently granted councilmanic authority to pass a modest sales tax increase to support access to our arts and cultural institutions. It is my hope that regional governments, via the Regional Policy Committee (which I sit on), will be consulted to identify priorities and goals for the use of this funding. Ongoing operating subsidy along with a revenue stream to bond for capital support is something I strongly support.

As a councilmember representing a district, I have first hand witnessed the power of bringing the non-profit and government sectors together to enhance the arts. Working together, my office was instrumental to bringing back Bumbershoot, saving the Cinerama, and helping countless arts and cultural venues navigate basic city services around permitting, utilities, and public safety. My team and I will always make ourselves available to move swiftly to help the arts sector with any and every request for assistance. Robust support from government is instrumental to building a vibrant arts and cultural sector.

I am happy to make myself available anytime to talk about moving forward on collaborations around arts and culture. You can find out more about my campaign and ways to get in touch at www.lewisforseattle.com
